September 11th AISD Bond Election (Austin, Texas)

Hello All,

Please forward to all you know in Austin, Texas.

AISD seems to be stacking the deck on their imminent bond election.

    September 11th AISD Bond Election
The Austin Independent School District's Bond Election will be held
Saturday, September 11, 2004. Early voting for this election will be
held August 25th thru September 7th. This election includes 6
propositions for a total of $519.5 million.

While I just learned of the bond election today on the late night news, and coincidentally the early voting ended today, hmmm..., also 86 of the 94 early voting locations were at AISD schools, double hmmm...

Personally I find this type of behavior unbecoming of our elected officials, and since there is $519.5 million on the line, please go vote your displeasure with this slight of hand attempt at taking more of our money.

Yes, our public school systems need to be fixed, but the conversations I've had with actual school teachers indicates that most of the problem are with the "administration" of the school systems and not with the amount of money the school systems are receiving.  [Addendum: AISD only spends 48% of its budget on "classroom instruction."  The current national average for "in the classroom" spending is 61.5%.  (Which is also a bogus number because things like Athletics and "learning to read a football pass protection pattern" is considered "in the classroom" spending by the National Center for Education Statistics.)  Can we also conjecture that the 1900's national average for real spending on "classroom instruction" was in the 90% range?]

You may find more information at the League of Women Voters.  The League of Women Voters of the Austin Area should post your Election Day voting stations shortly.
