Nourish to Flourish
Submitted by Staff on Fri, 2004-06-04 12:00.
In my previous column I discussed the importance of connecting with the life force through meditation, massage, chiropractic, and good nutrition—not to mention healthy thinking. (Please understand I'm not short-shrifting Yoga, Tai Chi, and various other arts and disciplines that work exceedingly well to elevate the life force. The universe is open in this regard, and many of my readers are no-doubt way ahead of me in cultivating best personal methods.)
The column today focuses on nutritional supplementation for an extended, vigorous life. These are select nutritionals, including personal care products, that mainly constitute my own personal regimen. As with the above life-force observations, my regimen should not be considered the last word on supplements, not even my last word. This is a rich field of continuous learning. For example, just recently I've learned of a supplement drink Xango (pronounced zayn-d ago) derived from the mangosteen fruit that shows remarkable healing properties.
What I'm suggesting is that as a Caucasian man in his mid-fifties (I prefer to think of it as seven good dog years) it seems many benefits have occurred in my own health and physiological youth relative to the Bell Curve norm of my chronological peers. And by simply identifying then describing the particular supplements in my own personal vitamin cabinet, readers can get a better immediate guide to what might work for them than were someone to launch an exhaustive scientific explanation of general benefits of every compound.
You should be aware as well that part of the reason for any relative longevity advantage I enjoy, or anyone else enjoys, is regular exercise: I do cardiovascular (CV) work three times a week for roughly half an hour each, some minor machine and free weight exercise, and walk probably 5 to 10 miles a week (normally carrying a bag of clubs on a golf course). This in combination with a lower-carbohydrate eating pattern with plenty of clean water makes me a relatively hyperfit 170#, 5'10" guy.
This is summer of 2004.
Within the next decade, experts in the field of life extension science believe the species will be on the threshold of a cure for senescence (aging) and age-related illnesses. Certainly by that time, the majority of catastrophic illness will have been resolved through biotechnology and normal medical breakthroughs.(1) It is reasonable to expect treatments for decline and decay of cell systems—skin, hair, bone, eyes, internal organs—through nonembryonic stem-cell cultivation and transplant, as well as other technologies.
This is a great moment to be "pro-life:" because you definitely want to be in the best possible shape going into the anti-aging tunnel to get the maximum benefit. For those of us in the baby boomer generation, and possibly even for some in the boomers' parents' generation—anti-aging treatments have a "stepping-stone" effect, extending your time to a point when subsequent more powerful treatments become available—effective immortality is a probability. Certainly, it's available to Gen X and subsequent.
But you gotta wanna. Here are my own supplement and personal care product recommendations:

Supplement Name |
Description and Amount |
Source |

Personal Radical Shield (336)
$39.97 |
[3:2](2) Multipurpose mineral and vitamin supplement. Super Radical Shield is the antioxidant and mineral formulation created by Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw. Pearson and Shaw wrote Life Extension: A Practical Scientific Approach in the 1980s, which spearheaded the radical life extension movement at the time.
I still use this supplement mainly because newer, arguably superior formulations, Life Extension Foundation's Life Extension Mix and Dr. David Williams' Daily Advantage, seem have a compound that disagrees slightly with my system. Many of you will probably do better with these newer, more robust supplements.
The daily foundation product of any supplement program is the most important, because it provides a wide range of anti-oxidant protection; boosting of circulatory, vision, mobility and other organ system function; and stimulates mental processes. |

|
Cognitex (90) |
[1:2] Cognitex is the premier mental-function enhancer offered by Life Extension Foundation. It includes components that improve circulation in the brain and nervous system, improve transmission of neural messages, reduce stress, and guard against degenerative disease. Personally, I'm sure it increases memory and logical clarity dramatically. |
LEF(3) |
|
Natural Growth Hormone Releasing Formula (120) |
[1:2] The release of growth hormone causes the body to burn fat, increase muscle mass and skin thickness, improve immune function. In addition, hGH stimulates the growth of organs that shrink with age—the heart, liver, spleen, kidneys, thymus, and thyroid. The LEF formulation provides a natural means of introducing hGH into the system by providing a select combination of its chemical precursors. |
LEF |
|
DHEA (100) 25 mg. |
[1:2] Primarily immune system function and mood elevation. |
LEF |
|
Indole-3-Carbinol/
Resveratrol (60) |
[1:1] Resveratrol occurs naturally in red wine and other products. In a widely publicized report, researchers at Harvard Medical School and BIOMOL Research Laboratories demonstrated resveratrol activates a "longevity gene" in yeast that extends life span by 70%. The effects mimic those of calorie restriction, the only proven way of extending maximum life span in humans. Resveratrol also has strong anticancer properties.(4) It belongs in any serious life-extender's daily supplement package. |
LEF |
|
Joint Principles (120) |
[1:2] An excellent product for mobility, keeps joints lubricated and protected against degenerative disease. The new forms of glucosamine and chondroitin offer what we have been yearning for—the retrieval of young-adult joint functionality. (I had previously used an excellent chondroitin-sulfate product from Life Services Supplements but LSS abandoned any meaningful supplement business to peddle high-markup lo-carb foods to chubbies.) I notice a distinct arrival of full mobility from my normal activity, running, and workouts, particularly in the knees. I run and jump as I did in my early thirties. |

|
Vision Advantage (120) |
[1:1] A Dr. Williams product I've decided to take in low doses as a long-term preventive measure. It strengthens healthy tissues throughout the eyes; promotes optimal blood flow, proper lens density, and stronger capillaries; reduces free-radical stress in the eyes, supports normal visual function and acuity, and improves night vision. |
MHN(5) |
|
Super MiraForte (120) |
[1:2] The "guy drug" to maintain sexual health and libido, by naturally elevating levels of testosterone, which also shows evidence of preventing heart attacks. (I'm thinking of upping my dosage, but first I should get a date. :) (6) |
LEF |
|
Super Carnosine Caps (90-500mg) |
[1:2] "Aging causes irreversible damage to the body's proteins. The underlying mechanism behind this damage is glycation. A simple definition of glycation is the cross-linking of proteins and sugars to form non-functioning structures in the body. The process of glycation can be superficially seen as unsightly wrinkled skin. Glycation is also an underlying cause of age-related catastrophes including the neurologic, vascular, and eye disorders."
In other words, carnosine blocks the main degenerative process that "makes us look old" (skin deterioration). It also protects muscle cell membranes from oxidation. Subjectively, it seems to have mitigated that process in me to the tune of maybe five years. Highly recommended. |
LEF |
|
Joint Advantage (120) |
[1:2] Picks up where glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate leave off. Discovered substances used by Australian aborigines and developed into joint building product. I feel this product works well with the standard glucosamine chondroitin formulation of Joint Principles above. It promotes flexibility and strength and freedom of movement. |
MHN |
|
CLA (120-1000 mg) |
[1:3] Studies show CLA can be used as an excellent tool for weight management because of its ability to reduce body fat and at the same time maintain lean muscle mass. From my personal experience based on recent use within the previous three months, CLA definitely metabolizes fat and reduces fatty tissue relative to muscular definition. Major contributor to "buff" look. |
LEP |
|
Enteric Aspirin, 81 mg |
[1:2] I consider this a low-risk, low-dosage palliative for blood pressure related heart problems and strokes. It "thins the blood" a bit. I'm sure the controversy continues, but supplementation at this level cannot be bad. |
CVS(7) |
|
Ibuprofen, 200 mg. |
[1:3] Anti-inflammatory drug that shows benefits in possibly helping to prevent Alzheimer's and enhance the effect of antioxidants. My favorite general painkiller and hangover preventive, too. |
CVS |
|
Melatonin (200, 500 mcg) |
[1:1] The LEF article from the referenced site states "the New England Journal of Medicine extols the many virtues of melatonin, including its powerful antioxidant effects, its potential benefit in preventing and treating cancer, its immune enhancement properties, its potential to slow aging, and its ability to promote better sleep and to avoid jet lag." LEF then argues for supplementation. I prefer the 500 mcg dosage; it promotes noticeably deeper sleep. |
LEF |
|
Heart Advantage (30) |
[1 pkg: 1] Heart Advantage is the premier cardiovascular enhancer offered by Dr. David Williams with Mountain Home Nutritionals. It contains L-carnitine, garlic, and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). |
MHN |
|
Pearson and Shaw's Inner Shampoo |
"The result of twenty years of research to develop a pure conditioning, non-foaming, nutrient shampoo. It works to penetrate deep into the hair shaft and bind with the cysteine in the hair, strengthening limp hair below the surface. Combined with the supplement Root Food the advanced Living Hair System nourishes the living roots of your hair while eliminating split ends with the very first application. " |

RejuvenexÒ
|
From the LEF product description:
"Topically applied nutrients have skin-rejuvenating effects that have been substantiated by research studies. Vitamin E has long been used for its healing benefits for burns and scarring. One form of vitamin C, ascorbyl palmitate, has potent free radical quenching effects; another form, ascorbyl phosphate, boosts the production of collagen type 3, strengthens collagen strands, is nonacidic, and is more stable in the water-like part of skin cells. A hallmark characteristic of mature skin is a slowdown in production of new cells to replace rapidly accumulating damaged cells. Vitamin A encourages skin cell renewal by increasing the rate of cell division by facilitating the stimulating effect of epidermal growth factor. Topical vitamin A is also known to stimulate collagen synthesis."
Skin care for the face and neck, I'm convinced this product is a state-of-the-art, scientifically founded skin lotion that will save years in your look and feel. Personal experience: with other products that promote healthy skin cells, benefit is approximately 10 years worth @50 years. |

Kiss My Face Body Lotion
Oil Free with NaPCA Moisturizer |
With Green Tea and Ginkgo Biloba. This is a simple lotion I located at Whole Foods, NaPCA being a natural moisturizer that pulls water from the surrounding air. |
Whole Foods (WF) |
|
Nature's Gate Hemp Lotion |
Hemp seed oil is one of the world's most richest sources of polyunsaturated fats, including both of the essential fatty acids (Omega 3 & Omega 6) and GLA, making it an unequalled natural emollient and moisturizer. |

New Feeling |
Original alpha-hydroxy rejuvenizing skin care lotion for softening and smoothing fine lines, age spots, and blemishes. |

Phytonectar |
This is a hair treatment I've found through my masseuse that actually provides a thickening quality. |
ALES(8) |

Infusium 23Ô
|
A standard hair protection, conditioning treatment, haven't researched it much but it's better than Brylcreem. |
CVS |
|
Ginger Root |
Started using this as a mobility agent, based on a friend telling me a tea made from ground ginger eliminates any joint pains. It's basically a universal cure from India, and very cheap. Just chew it. Good for indigestion, breath, mental acuity, too. |

On the websites associated with several of these supplements and products, you may learn more about the specific product and link to other pages that will provide the latest research on individual chemical compounds. Most, especially those from Life Extension Foundation, provide reading references from popular public and academic sources.
You will note the cost factor for supplementing at the level the above table suggests may be daunting. As a minimum use the multinutrient basic daily formula. This means probably $50/month/person. As you get older and your wealth grows, think of where you can add appropriate supplements. Remember the idea is to stay young and vibrant as long as possible, and then consider what that is worth to you. Further, you need to incorporate regular physical exercise of at least my modest level (above) to receive the full benefits. This will be easier with massage, meditation, and other "connection" disciplines as suggested in my previous column.

- Please refer to this LEF link for women's health supplements. This article focuses on my program only, and several minerals are particular important for women as opposed to men. LEF has a good range of supplements for all ages, genders, and conditions. Even though the basic life extension technology is similar, a individualized program for women or children is desirable. Several good sources exist on the Web for building such a program. Good luck. Don't forget Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw. Sandy is a girl. back to text
