Schmitt Sohne 2005 Rheinhessen Germany

From the people who brought you those nice Rieslings, a red. It’s not a bad one either. The wine comes in a very cool looking red metal bottle (at least the 375ml version.)

This wine has a clear, medium, bright ruby color with little wine structure going for it. There are some nice cherry notes with some berry undertones, not a lot of astringency, a bit of sweetness, but not too much, with a good balance but a short finish. It’s most like a Red Zinfandel or Pinot Noir. In a word, a likable wine. And don’t worry about the metal bottle, there was a plastic insert (some might be appalled) inside for the wine but there’s a screw top cap.
