Avia 2005 Pinot Noir Vardar Valley Macedonia

Avia? How about “Ave Maria” as far as taste is concerned. The Chardonnay was better but only slightly. And Macedonia? Who knew they made wine. And more importantly, did anyone tell them?

This wine has a clear bright deep garnet color with a bit of structure, but nothing to write home about. As a matter of fact, it’s darker in color than your typical Pinots. Your nose might detect some faint cheery and blackberry notes but these good things don’t seem to follow through on your palette. There doesn’t seem to be a full fruit sensation when you taste this wine. In a word, the wine has a weak taste. The tannins tend to ruin the balance and the finish. With no real taste, a year or two more in the bottle won’t really help this wine. Admittedly it’s only $4, but look elsewhere. And I’ve got to get my publisher to front me more money for better wine.
