To misquote Clara Peller (from those “Where’s the beef” commercials, “Where’s the wine?” I had always heard about people eagerly waiting the fall Beaujolais Nouveau. After drinking this one I’m not sure why. If you aren’t a devotee of something like this, perhaps you can spend your money elsewhere.
It’s a clear, bright medium ruby color with – and as owing to the Nouveau part – no wine structure at all. There’s a very fresh taste – again owing to the Nouveau part – that really puts this wine in a class by itself and unlike what I normally taste. In a nutshell this has a grape juice taste with the alcohol but nothing else. I even tried to “age” the wine to see if it improves, to no avail. There aren’t any off notes, but frankly this seems to be an acquired taste. It’s very astringent (dry) with an OK balance and a medium finish. FYI: A plastic cork.
Grape juice with a shot of cheap ouzo would have more structure and body. Probably tastes better too.
Okay, I finished the bottle because Bacchus wouldn’t drink anymore.
