Finally, MLB comes clean! Why did the FEDS have to get involved?

So, finally, the 300+ pages of the George Mitchell report hits the desk with a decided thump. Something like 10 years after this problem started and at least 3 years after the Department of Justice (DOJ) got involved because of Balco. Members of all 30 pro ball teams have been affected and marque players have been named in this report. All of this is a gigantic black eye for Pro Baseball. My question is a bit more basic. Why did the FEDS get involved in the first place? Is this NOT an internal matter with Major League Baseball? Aren't they responsible for policing their own backyard? How is this any different than the Tour de France disqualifying teams for the same reason? Once again, your tax dollars at work! Shouldn't the DOJ be going something a bit more important?
