If only. I hear you. I think more self-governance would be great, but unfortunately, despite being a hopeless optimist and idealist, I'm not sure that the majority of people are ready for the responsibility for that. Sadly I think people are still looking for an Oedipal get-out clause, a Daddy who will take care of them, rather than face responsibility themselves. You see that on all levels, not just govt, it affects the way we see religion, [and] all [sorts] of things.

I think people like us that can think a bit more freely, and out of that box, are in the minority.
