Switching Gears on Kirk Watson's Senate Bill 1184

Dear Members & Friends:

        PLEASE FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TODAY!!

I received a call from the Senate Intergovernmental Affairs
Committee staff person who told me that they have gotten the message
that you oppose SB 1884 to make it more difficult for citizen's
petitioning on city charter amendments!  They have kindly asked us to
please refer calls directly to the author, Sen. Kirk Watson -- so
please stop calls to the Committee office.  Instead, please call to
express your opposition to SB 1184 to Senator Watson's office at
512-463-0114.  Please be polite and firm.  If anything, he should
make it easier for citizen's initiatives and referendums.  Then, you
can email the entire committee listed here.  Don't forget the chair
and vice-chairs of this committee.

Note that all the members of this committee have signed on to the
Corridor/Toll moratorium bill (SB 1267), except Rep. Gallegos (who
has been in the hospital).  You should thank the members for their
support of SB 1267, wish Rep. Gallegos a complete recovery, and ask
him to support SB 1267 too.

Senate Committee on Intergovernmental Affairs

Also, there is a hearing on Wednesday on HB 2280, sponsored by Rep.
Mark Strama (D-Austin), to eliminate the "primary screenout"
provision in our candidate petitioning process for independent
candidates and parties.  Currently, only voters who did not vote in
either party primary can sign petitions for independent candidates
and parties to get on the ballot.  HB 2280 would eliminate this.
Please contact these people on the House Elections Committee to
express your support of this bill -- feel free to call them or email
them through their web sites.  You can also attend the hearing, if
you wish, this coming Wednesday at 2PM in E2.028 (the House
underground building).  Please note that if you contact Rep. England
and Rep. Anchia's office, you can also ask them to support our
Corridor/Toll moratorium legislation (HB 2772), which they have yet
to do.  Last -- thank the other members of the committee for
supporting HB 2772!

Leo Berman, Dwayne Bohac, Kirk England, Lon Burnam,  Rafael Anchia,
Joe Farias, Charlie Howard

AGAIN, PLEASE FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO ALL!

Independently yours,
