Some Common Sense, Please

I am reading a lot of articles and letters from Conservatives and I am very troubled about the direction these folks are heading. Their efforts to improve the morals and ethics of Americans are, in many cases, in direct conflict with the 10th Amendment.

I became a certified Conservative during Goldwater's campaign. The policies of the group felt good to me and I began to pursue a life of working to limit the government and making the budget more fiscal in nature.

I didn't go on the Internet until 1995 and my only contact with the GOP party was from attending the meetings in my districts in California. It wasn't until I read the platform in 1996 that I began to see the GOP deciding that the 10th Amendment wasn't worth saving. This group wanted too much authority on social issues to originate from Washington DC bypassing the approval of the States.

In my copy of the constitution, this is not within the authority of the Federal government and these issues should be sent back to the States without wasting another minute on the subject. In my copy of the constitution, no social issues are even mentioned. The poor showing in the election certainly confirmed my suspicions that the American voter does not want to hand the feds this much authority and they stayed home by the millions.

The religious right was starting to make their mark on the GOP and it was a terrible influence to try to get them to shut up and allow us to bring the voters back to the polls. We all know what happened in 1998. The Clinton scandal broke into the news and Internet and the focus changed dramatically. The RR hit the news sites with articles of unbelievable hell unless all Americans became apart of their movement.

The discussion forums also began to fill with religious trolls who obliterated any possible debate on any single issue coming out of the house/senate. These folks were reacting to Clinton's actions and not giving any thought to what the constitution had to say (or not say) about all this. The constitution made it very clear what the laws were, in respect to impeachment, but our independent council ignored the more serious problems and Clinton's diddling with Monica became the focus.

The religious right became unclued and adultery became a reason for impeachment. That started a list of sins that must be legislated immediately to save America from another Clinton. The list grew to include oral sex, gambling, prostitution, pornography, divorce, abortion, homosexuals, and single mothers and on and on.......

Whoa! the Republican Party became two separate parties: Social Conservatives and Fiscal Conservatives. To many old time Conservative Republicans, the religious right sunk the party into chaos.

Let me back up a few years. I attended a private school back in the 40s and 50s. These girls were from the old Hollywood families and were long-time Republicans. In 1948 we had a mock convention and we had to assign many girls to represent the Democrats. (Things in Hollywood have changed)

Just after the convention in 2000, I received a conference call from a bunch of these same classmates asking me if I intended to vote for Bush. They were very apprehensive about his social issues taking over the government. Oh, yes, I was also very concerned about this and told them honestly that I would not vote for Bush unless he cleared up his agenda. I waited until the last week for just a hint about his wanting to keep the social issues within the states and not within the federal government. My second concern was whether he would sign us up for another term under the United Nations.

He cleared up nothing and I voted for Browne.

Now the Social Conservatives want to remove another section of the 10th Amendment and want Christian prayers to be brought back into the schools. They have flooded the sites and boards with their plan to make America into a Christian country.

Many also have very firm convictions that homosexuality should be against the law and they won't quit until it is. When I question them on how they could get a constitution amendment that would remove the rights of millions of Americans, they have no idea. They have never read the constitution and they have no clue what the hell they are doing. The sad thing is, they are building in numbers and their lists are getting longer and longer.

Their plan is to make it impossible for a Clinton to ever be elected again. These folks can't be reasoned with and they have no idea that they are running some good old Republicans away from the party. I have personally witnessed three excellent political boards bcome ruined by the threats of the religious right posters. I received an email that my efforts to infiltrate my atheism into the government would not be allowed.

Atheism is a negative, how could this be infiltratible? (is this a word? well, it should be) It's so silly I didn't even answer the email. My question is why do we want to infiltrate anything into our government? We have a perfectly wonderful constitution that needs to be taken back from the attorneys and given back to the people. We need our taxes cut so that we can make our choices of schools for our kids, insurance policies for our adults and the most important choice of all; the freedom to practice the religion of our choice.

We need the freedom to not accept any mandate from Washington DC that is not in our interest. We need to reinstate the power of the 10th Amendment and get on with guiding Bush into making the proper decisions. First of all, we have to educate ourselves on what these proper decisions are. Do they fit into the constitution including the 2nd and 10th Amendments? Or are they going to make America into another Spanish Inquisition?

The third parties are now starting to form again. These individuals will not accept a religious government. I won't either. So let's reunite the Republican Party and allow it to represent all Americans not just Christian, white, straight ones.

This is just common sense.
