At the 1991 National Convention in Chicago the focus was all about nominating a candidate for president. Those who controlled the convention also controlled the LP and would do so with a rapacious hand and greedy design for another decade. Woven into that action a smaller drama was being played out that, if understood, would have told some interesting truths about those in power.

There was one moment in the 2004 campaign when the truth won through. W. Leon Smith, Editor of the Iconoclast in Crawford, Texas, endorsed John Kerry for reasons that were objective and honest. The eruption of vilification from Bush supporters were monumental. But most Americans recognized that one small paper had stood up and simply done the right thing, no matter what the cost.

Protect the rights of Americans - Elect another kind of animal for President

At the close of the First World War the Elks wrote a check for $1,000.000.00 so that America's Veterans could have a hospital for the first time. That is how it happened. Hardly anyone knows that today.

Beware of government, it takes credit for what it did not do - and it blames us when it fails.

Elections were on all of our minds when I went to Elks that Tuesday, but the questions that became the central focus of our discussion. lead us in unusual directions.

My friend Robert Crouch, a professor of economics who teaches at the University of California at Santa Barbara, asked me what I had been doing with myself over the summer.
