Hounding Obama 6 – Failing, and should be

Peter Namtvedt's picture

By hook or crook. The Obama government will take over the financial companies. When the ruse of “outrage” over the contractual bonuses at AIG collapsed, the CEOs of the biggest banks were called in for a private meeting with the president. No doubt he made it crystal clear that they were in charge…er, that socialism would win the day.

Socialism has been proven a failure. It has been soundly refuted in theory by Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek. It has been proven a failure in practice all around the world, in Russia, Romania, Yougoslavia, Cuba, and it is even being abandoned by China.

President Obama’s policies are a mixture of socialism and pragmatism. If it were said that he is simply a socialist, that would paint him as far more principled than he is. He is a pragmatist above all, with a preference for the failed policies of socialism as espoused by John Maynard Keynes.

However, the pragmatism of Obama ends up being simply socialism after all. His claim, in the face of reality, is that he is just repeating what worked for Franklin Delano Roosevelt. What worked?

The problem is that all Roosevelt did was to worsen and prolong the Great Depression that Herbert Hoover began. They are dead wrong, those who attribute that Depression to a false boom fed by monetary easing in the 1920s by the Federal Reserve and that the only problem in the 1929 to 1932 time period was the Fed’s monetary tightening. They are wrong in holding that the Depression was cured by keeping wages high, by bank holidays, by massive public works spending, and finally ended by war.

The stock market had already started going into correction before October 1929. The monetary tightening speeded that up. The major trigger was the news just days before October 28 that the last obstacles holding up the Smoot-Hawley Tariff act were gone, and that passage was now certain (even though the act did not become law until the next summer). The enactment of that Act, together with retaliation from abroad, brought world trade to a standstill.

Obama’s policies are failed policies. They were tried before. They failed before.
I should certainly want them to remain failed policies, and want them to fail. I want them to not even get out of the gate. I want Obama to fail.

If he does not, this recession will get worse, as we find out it is more costly than we expected and that the ills of the recession are not really getting cured.

All of us deserve something. Some will nevertheless end up with just their native body and mind they were born with, with nothing to show for it. There are two ways to get and deserve what you want.

There is the economic way and there is the political way. One way is the old-fashioned way: work to earn it. The other way is to steal or print money. The one way is the economic way, the other is the political way.

The economic way

The economic way does not involve coercion, but rather division of labor and trade. It is the natural way of work, expending effort and using one’s brains, one’s reason to tame nature, to claim land, to develop it, to use its resources to create what life as a human being requires. To be able to use one’s reason and other talents requires that you are free to make your own choices about how to use the scarce resources at your disposal.

Throughout our country we will find people in that situation. Each person or each household has certain scarce resources. Each has information about how best to use them, and their own intentions, plans or projects using those resources, in order to survive and flourish. They are all different.

There is no one grand national project to which we all dedicate our efforts and time. There are over three hundred million such projects.

No single person or group of a few people gathered in Washington DC share the knowledge that all of these people have. No such person can possibly accomplish the success of all of these projects. There are hundreds of millions little and big projects. We all accept that some will succeed, some will do so exceedingly well, but some will fail. Walt Disney failed almost 100 times before he struck it rich.

Along the way, charities develop to help those who fail and have nothing left with which to start over. Private charities as they operated before the welfare state started taking over was private. It was personal. Donors engaged in dialogue with recipient. Charity placed demands on the recipient to do more for themselves, which avoided a growing dependence.

Welfare and socialist systems treat the goods and services as a national pool and the recipients as a homogeneous group that must be treated evenly, without imposing tailor-made advice. Means tests create incentives to drop one’s income to pass and remain within the system, creating dependence. No pride of self-improvement will develop from that. Anyone who genuinely cared for the poor should be horrified by such accomplishments.

The political way

On the other hand, if you don’t want to work to earn a living, you lose your job and live on welfare, you sleep under bridges and panhandle, you resort to getting government subsidies, laws that protect your field of business such as licensing laws or tariffs that raise the price of imported products, you get scholarships and loans to go to college, graduate school and become a professor teaching “liberal” political science. If you don’t want to make an honest living you become dependent on others or turn to a life of crime.

You do not invent or create a single new thing all your life, but somehow acquire the product of other people and use them to procure more.

You plead with people all around you to be kind and merciful. You fling in their faces the grimy facts of your childhood abuse, the lack of books in your home when you were young, you enlist the sympathy of everyone for your lack of a father figure, your skin color, your having dropped out of school, your cruel boss who fired you.

Obama’s plan

Now picture the Obama and Biden Agenda implemented. You have chosen which way you want to make your living. Everyone has decided.

Those who chose to work, to use reason to make a living will face regulations the likes of which the world has not seen. You will be volunteered, taxed and loaded with debt. The deficit spending will had more and more to the national debt, to the total unfunded commitments of the government. The total will exceed $66 trillion, plus your own self-imposed debts, will be a sum so huge that each household’s part will be hundreds of thousands of dollars – which you will never be able to pay off.

If social security had not already been shown to threaten bankruptcy of the whole ecomony, then the trillions of bank bailouts will. However, another evil force is at work also: medical care. If Obama creates a single payer system or a system that controls what doctors may or may not do and what they may charge, demand for medical care will sky-rocket. Waiting lines or lists will be created and grow to incredible lengths. Patients will heal on their own or die before their appointments come. There will also be fewer doctors, as they will have more and more restraints imposed on what they may do and what they can charge.

Obama’s socialist system would be a dream for those who choose the political way to making a living.

This is a plan that cannot succeed.

This is a plan that I want to fail, or to not even get started.

You want Obama to fail? Do

You want Obama to fail? Do you want America to fail?
The majority of Americans voted for Obama, and I respect that fact. While I do not agree with all his decisions, I do not want him to fail.
I realize that no President of either party has followed the Constitution for decades. I recognize that the bank "bailouts" began under a Republican administration and continued under a Democratic one. There is really no difference between the two. Big government and perpetual war continues either way.
The complete story of the "economic crisis" in America remains to be told. The truth is more complex than a simple two party football game, and so are the agendas at work.

The majority of Americans

The majority of Americans voted for Obama

Wrong. The majority of voters voted for Obama. The majority didn't vote. The people who voted for Obama are a minority when you consider the ENTIRE population of America.

But it's entirely moot. People casting a ballot somewhere doesn't make Obama's evil actions "okay". Killing is still killing, looting is still looting, even when done by someone "elected".

I realize that no President of either party has followed the Constitution for decades.

Then why support them, and justify their actions under the guise of "they were elected"? Does an elected tyrant become a better tyrant? Are the men and women hurt by those actions any less painful?

I doubt it. Dictators and despots througout history have been elected and their actions were wrong. Likewise, when people living in America do wrong, they should be called and opposed for BEING WRONG.

Hounding Obama 6

Blah,Blah,Blah and Yada,Yada,Yada.
Sounds just like your typical Rush Limbaugh conservative :
Short on Facts , Long on Rhetoric.
Long on divisive rhetoric.
Long on incendiary rhetoric.
Long on hate-filled rhetoric.
Just like Rush Limbaugh.
The new and real leader of the Conservative Republican Party.
And this Peter Namtvedt wrote this seemingly endless rant for a Libertarian Ezine?
What a waste of space for printing it and what a waste of time for reading it.
At best , this is a mere opinion piece , at worst a pure hatchet job.
Over and over , Peter states that Obama's policies are failed policies , yet all economic indicators are that these policies are indeed working to turn the Republican induced recession around.
Peter , don't you read the news, watch TV,or keep up with any other news sources?
You provide no facts to prove your points about FDR's efforts to curb the recession of the '30's , yet there are reams of articles , statistics , and yes , facts that support the conclusions that government spending during that time did much to mitigate the effects of that recession, while also supporting the conclusion that each "fallback" of the economy during those times was caused by Conservative Republican insistence on balancing the budget.
I won't do your homework for you and provide you with the facts your opinion piece is so lacking in , for as a contributor to a prestigious Ezine such as "From Reason to Freedom" , you should have the literacy to do your own research and provide those facts on your own.
Instead you fall back , once again, into the Rush Limbaugh-mold of most conservatives and provide only "anecdotal evidence" to support your claims.
Stories such as "Walt Disney failed almost 100 times before he struck it rich."
Would providing sources for such statements be too much to ask or maybe too inconvenient , or perhaps contrary to your stated mission : Causing Obama to fail.
You do realize that if Obama fails , so too will America fail?
Is that what you and other Rush Limbaugh-conservatives want?
So you and they can say "I told you so , I told you so."?
Like a spoiled child who, after eight years of a free run throughout the house ,has been caught with his hand in the cookie jar , had his hand slapped , and been banished from the kitchen for at least four years.
What kind of an American wants to see his nation fail?
I did not support George Bush as President ,nor did I support the invasion of Iraq, yet I fully and completely supported our troops who , through no fault of their own , were thrust into a battle on foreign shores that never needed to be fought.
Not once did I wish for our troops to fail in their mission, even though George Bush changed the target of that mission several times.
Not once did I wish for our children , our boys and girls in uniform , to be harmed , maimed , or killed , for any reason , much less just so I could wag my finger in George Bush's face and say "I told you so".
You may not support Barack Obama and you may not support his economic recovery plan , but surely you support the INTENT of his economic recovery plan.
Surely you want America to recover her rightful place in the world.
Surely you want an end to the pain and suffering being experienced by the working-class people of America.
Surely you consider the battle for America's future , and thus the future of all of us , more than just a childish squabble over a schoolyard game of marbles between two bullies.
Surely you consider.....something.

[Hi Hookman, Good to hear from you again. I'll add a fuller reply tomorrow, but did want you to know Peter generally does his "homework" (and gives references, see Libertarianism Needs a Foundation and the series Troubling Clauses in the U.S. Constitution) and isn't a Rush clone. --MJ]

Fantastic post....

This is what I have been saying for months now, but you said it in a much clearer way. Great post.

Dear Hookman

Dear Hookman,

I was myself near to foaming at the mouth, like yourself, when I drafted this piece, but I think I got myself calmed down before the final was submitted. I don't get into ranting matches, but try to be reasonable. I'm not going to answer point for point, but try to hit the main ones.

Most free market scholars (Libertarian and Objectivist articles and books about FDR's reaction to the Great Depression, all but perhaps Milton Friedman) document how the tariffs should have been repealed instead of being beefed up, that FDR should not have made owning gold illegal and devalued the dollar, he should not have taken the country into massive debt for make-work of temporary projects, or artificially kept wages high and vilified businessmen. As 1940 approached FDR relented, let wages fall and laid a lighter hand on the economy. Things started to improve. They would undoubtedly have kept improving without the disastrous war which got thousands of American troops killed and wasted a large amount of money, a war that FDR provoked by, among other things, abruptly halting all trade with Japan in July 1941.[1]

Obama's recovery plan is even opposed by Paul Krugman, the great leftist economist at Princeton. Obama is a rookie president, the rookiest ever.

When Obama starts out planning to repeat FDR's mistakes, it puts America on course for failure. This country has already suffered enough from the crazy policies of George W. Bush. The American spirit and the American economy needed time to heal, to let the free market solve the problems. The recession you now see is the cure.

For America to recover and succeed requires that Obama's plan is not implemented.

Peter

[1: Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated multiple plans to goad the Japanese into attacking the US in 1940. Obviously he succeeded on December 7, 1941. For further information see the full FDR 1940 plan which was declassified by Clinton in the 1990s and there was even a book published in the 1940s that laid out all the deceptions of FDR as well. --MJ]

Socialism a failure?

Socialism a failure? It may seem that way wqithin the iron curtain-like insecure homeland borders of the USA, but most of the world knows otherwise. Without socialism no modern democracy would function. Forget these 'old worlde' distinctions and take a look around outside the ostrich hole.
But of course, you won'yt allow intelligent criticism to be published. So much for acting in the spirit of the first amendment!

[Unless you have no problem with theft, then, yes, Socialism is a failure. --MJ]

I forget where socialism did

I forget where socialism did work, hand in hand with freedom. Please let us know.
