Strange Bedfellows

"Living is easy with eyes closed,
Misunderstanding all you see.
It's getting hard to be someone
But it all works out.
It doesn't matter much to me"

Strawberry Fields Forever
The Beatles

I have always known that politics makes strange bedfellows but this just rips the rag off the bush.

I'll be upfront with my deep-seated dislike for Giuliani-I consider him to be a one-trick pony ("9-11", "9-11", "9-11")as well as smarmy and perhaps dangerous to boot.

Pair him with another, even more (if that is indeed, possible) dangerous and creepy guy; well, it seems to be the elements of a perfect storm of downright scariness.

What is the strange in the strange bedfellows label though, is that two seemingly different yet toxic ideologies flew so far out there that they have now actually collided.

On one hand you have Giuliani, a guy who's been married so often that wedding bells sound like an alarm clock to him- and Robertson, a homo-hating guy who has made millions hawking family values. On the surface they don't seem to fit; not even in a May-October-opposites-attract-his yin-to-his yang-sort of way.

But dig deeper-behind the metorphorical closed doors of domestic bliss and you'll find they have at least one thing in common-Israel. And if you look further into both of their blind support for Israel and how that might impact relations with other Middle East nations should Rudy become the next "decider" then you'll come face to face with a nightmare-inducing vision of the future.

Then again, perhaps it's as simple as the process of elimination- who else is there for Robertson to throw his poisonous, hate-fueled support behind?

Mitt Romney? Nah, he's probably still pissed about Pat calling mormons "cult members". (A cult is any group that has a form of godliness, but does not recognize Jesus Christ as the unique son of God.... One test of a cult is that it often does not strictly teach that Jesus is the only begotten Son of God who Himself is God manifested in the flesh.... Christian-oriented cults include the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormons), the Worldwide Church of God, Christian Science, Unity, Unitarianism, The Way International, Rosicrucian Society of America, Bahai, Hare Krishna, Scientology, the Unification Church, and the Jehovah's Witnesses.
-- Pat Robertson, CBN pamphlet entitled "Cults," dated 1992
)

Hillary Clinton? Hmmm, she doesn't seem to care who's in her camp as long as they've got serious money...wait, she's probably not on board with the whole "I know this is painful for the ladies to hear, but if you get married, you have accepted the headship of a man, your husband. Christ is the head of the household and the husband is the head of the wife, and that's the way it is, period.
-- Pat Robertson, The 700 Club television program, January 8, 1992
" thing-she just don't strike me as the submissive type.

Ron Paul? Pffffft! Pat knows Dr. Paul is not batshit crazy enough to play ball with his Rapture plans.

John McCain? Too crazy.

Fred Thompson? Too Hollywood. (nudge, nudge, wink, wink)

Barack Obama? Isn't he Muslim?

Dennis Kuchinich? Too wimpy.

Obviously, ol' Pat ran through all the options and the only one sufficiently looney enough to think an endorsement from Pat Robertson is a good thing was the man who frightens me the most to think about his finger on "the button".

Strange, indeed.
